Exigence of "Fuck the Draft"

The exigence of this poster derives from everyone’s building hate for the draft. People were being drafted constantly and everyone began to get tired of it. The teenager burning the draft is because no one wanted to be drafted into the war. It stopped being a patriotic thing and started to feel like they were being forcibly dragged into it. There were many people protesting the draft and fighting. This poster meant a lot to the movement and exemplifies the feelings of many. People began to burn actual draft tickets and were being fined for it, some even sent to jail. Even to this day the idea of the draft is hated.

  1. I am curious as to what caused this vitriol. Was the antiwar sentiment growing for years prior to this posters creation or is this from the very beginnings of the antiwar movement? If this was one of the first actions of the movement it would make their point and the exigency seem even more powerful.

  2. This poster embodies how were people were feeling at the time which is important. It would be interesting to see how the reaction would be to this poster today if it was put out? Would it still be relevant to Americans today

  3. I could only imagine how young men felt in America after years of draft implementation. Particularly I think the draft had a detrimental effect on the families who had generations of men drafted because it is hard for a woman to watch her father or husband go to war; however, when her father, husband, brother, and potentially her son end up in war it's a nail biting situation. I personally never agreed with the idea of a draft because it's not only unfair to the man being drafted but also to the family he is being removed from.
